An unforgettable photo adventure to British Columbia’s Princess Royal Island, home of the Spirit Bear, a rare white black bear also called the Kermode. The area is also home to abundant wildlife with characteristics of tameness not unlike those of the Galapagos Islands. Orca, humpback, eagle, and wolf encounters are not uncommon.

Experience the awesome grandeur of the inside Passage. Composed of equal parts granite, water, ancient forests, and silence, it is a wilderness par excellence. Waterfalls drip from every contour. Our boat ¾ the 50-foot power yacht, Delphinus ¾ will slip through these placid waters as incredible scenery peaks at us from around every corner.

This workshop is truly an adventure. No other part of coastal northwestern North America offers so much wilderness as this stretch of the Inside Passage of northern British Columbia. A well kept secret that’s filled with a lifetime of exploration and discovery! You will be among the few to see and experience it.

Small group size allows in-depth instruction along with a high degree of personalized attention for beginners and professionals alike. You’ll learn how to make award winning wildlife images. A special program is planned for each and every day. Professional wildlife photographer and writer, Weldon Lee, will be leading this workshop. We will do everything in our power to make this workshop a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Itinerary

Days 1-10 (Tuesday-Saturday) - Depart at 9:00 a.m. Plan on arriving in Ketchikan, Alaska, the day before, if not earlier. You may wish to arrive a couple of days ahead of our scheduled departure. There are a number of interesting things to see including three totem parks. There is an active carver’s studio, Creek Street (a museum with its own totems), and an interesting waterfront.

During the first day, you will cruise along the southern boundary of Misty Fjords National Monument prior to crossing into Canada. Following a brief visit to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and Canadian Customs, you’ll head to Princess Royal Island, your adventure’s featured destination.

It’s impossible to give a suggested itinerary for this particular workshop due to its highly opportunistic nature. The itinerary is kept purposely flexible in order to allow for the unexpected events that often become the highlights of an adventure.

Our search for the Spirit Bear will involve a bit of hiking and allow you to become immersed in this mystical area. You’ll have the opportunity to photograph a variety of species. Unparalleled magical landscapes will fill your viewfinder at every location we visit. Whale watching, island hiking, cruising and, if you like, fishing add the coup de grace to this already once-in-a-lifetime adventure. It would be an understatement to say that photographic subjects are unlimited.

You will enjoy daily discussions; lectures and slide and video shows designed to enhance your understanding and interest in the marine biology and natural history of the area. You may bird watch and beach comb; listen to the underwater world through hydrophones. The itinerary allows ample time as well for you to read, write, or just plain relax.

On the last day, following breakfast aboard the Delphinus, you'll catch the shuttle for your flight home; or. to the hotel, should you decide to spend a few days on Vancouver Island.

This itinerary is meant as a guide.

Weather conditions, tides, and unexpected photo opportunities

will dictate when, and if, we visit certain locations.
