In Alaska’s far north, just south of the Arctic Circle along the Bering Sea, is one of the world’s most accessible herds of wild, free roaming Musk Ox, or “Oomingmak” as the Inpiaq speaking Natives call them. Reintroduced in 1971, their population now numbers upwards of 1,800 animals, practically guaranteeing photo opportunities with these survivors of the last ice age. Since our adventure is timed to coincide with their calving season, we will likely have opportunities to photograph newborn calves. Sprinkled with lakes, bare rocky ridges, and patches of low-growing willow shrub, the area is also home to a variety of other mammals including moose, grizzly bear, and reindeer.

There’s more! The region around Nome is one of the richest breeding areas for birds in North America. Species such as Red-throated and Pacific Loons, Tundra Swans, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Eider, Harlequin Ducks, Willow Ptarmigans, and Arctic Terns are common and should offer many photo opportunities.

Small group size allows in-depth instruction along with a high degree of personalized attention for beginners and professionals alike. You’ll learn how to make award winning wildlife images and have fun doing it. Although time in the field is a priority, indoor classroom sessions will take place as time allows. We will do everything in our power to make this workshop a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Taylor Road leads into the interior of the Seward Peninsula, climbing through beautiful scenery along the way. The Native Village of Teller sits at the end of the third road which crosses multiples rivers and passes through a series of rolling, coastal hills. Reindeer and musk ox roam the area near Teller Meals, classroom sessions, and time for downloading images will take place as time allows.
