The ledgendary Tandayapa Lodge, our base of operations, is a World Class destination for individuals wanting to photograph Nature's crown jewels. According to one individual, "If you don't see twenty (hummingbird) species in a day or two, you just aren't trying."

A sampling of hummers likely to fill our viewfinders include the Booted Racket-tail, Andean Emerald, Western Emerald, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Purple-throated Woodstar, Sparkling Violetear, Brown Violetear, Green Violetear, Rufous-tailed, Velvet-purple Coronet, Buff-tailed Coronet, Purple-bibbed White-tip, Violet-tailed Sylph, and Gorgeted Sunangel.

Hummingbirds are not the only avian subjects likely to grace our viewfinders. A colorful variety of tanagers can be photographed from the comfort of our lodge patio as they feed along side Fruiteaters, Becards, Whitestarts, Flower-piercers, Saltators, and a myriad of Flycatchers. A quiet walk along one of the lodges many trails will uncover other families including Woodcreepers, Antbirds, Antthrushes, Antpittas, Tapaculos, Manakins, and Cotingas.

Small group size allows personalized one-on-one instruction. Participants will learn how to attract hummers to a setup, the art of preparing attractive photo backdrops, and the use of multiple high-speed flash units. Through hands-on instruction, participants will learn to produce award-winning hummingbird images any time or any place.

Itinerary

Day 1  Upon your arrival in Quito, you'll be met by our Ecuadorian representative and w

Day 2-6 These days will be filled photographing not only hummingbirds but other species as well. Unlike the birders that are up and out at the crack of dawn, you'll enjoy a leisurely breakfast around 6:30 a.m. Afterwards, it's off to "work" photographing Nature's crown jewels. Sometime during mid-morning, you'll break for coffee; or, whatever "rings your bell." ...but not for long, because there are hundreds of new images waiting to be made before lunch. Since afternoon showers are common place, there's no better time for napping, reading, or gathering with friends o'er a cup 'o tea. Once the sky clears, it's "back to the grindstone." You may even want to spend an hour, or so, photographing the other colorful avian residents of the valley as you explore the many trails surrounding Tandayapa Lodge. Once the light disappears, it's time for a Caipirinha, a Brazilian drink that's become one of my favorites when traveling in South America. Heck, a person could get used to this sort of thing! By week's end, you'll have thousands of new and spectacular hummingbird images; and, you'll have the know-how to produce similar images once you return home.

Day 7  All good things must come to an end, including your South American adventure. Following an early breakfast, you'll be transported to the airport where you'll board your flight back home.
