Thousands of bald eagles gather to feed upon a late run of chum salmon in the Valley of the Eagles near Haines, Alaska, in what is know as the world’s largest gathering of eagles.

Since time immemorial, bald eagles have been drawn to this area. Each winter they gather along the open waters of the Chilkat River to feed upon spawned-out salmon carcasses. Up to 3,500 or more bald eagles have been counted during peak congregation times in mid-November.

The awesome sight of cottonwood trees filled to capacity with eagles as hundreds more stand sentinel along river flats waiting to tear apart fish carcasses with their powerful beaks and talons is a spectacle never to be forgotten.

Timed to coincide with the height of the eagle congregation, this photography workshop practically guarantees photographers unlimited opportunities to capture breathtaking images of our nation’s symbol of freedom.
