Day 1 (Sat): Anchorage
Your adventure begins in Anchorage, Alaska, where you will join our group for dinner at 5 p.m.
Day 2 (Sun): Anchorage - Silver Salmon Creek Lodge
Our bush plane will transport you from Anchorage to Silver Salmon Creek. Upon arrival, an ATV will transport you and your luggage to the lodge. The ATVs will be your means of transportation during your stay at the lodge. An early arrival combined with long days (over 19 hours of daylight) will allow plenty of time for photographing bears during the afternoon.
Day 3 (Mon): Silver Salmon Creek Lodge
Today, you'll photograph brown bears near the lodge. It was in this area that a sow and her yearling triplets treated our group to some of the best bear photography found in Alaska. We may even run into Cowboy - a big boar that hangs out in the area. I call him Cowboy because of the way he struts and walks bow-legged.
Day 4, 5 (Tue, Wed): Shelter Creek
Our charter boat will transport our group to a secluded and remote tent camp situated along Shelter Creek in the shadow of Iliamna Volcano. Breathtaking scenery provides the backdrop as you photograph Alaska's wildlife from a new and different vantage point. Sows take advantage of migrating salmon at low tide while their cubs play nearby. Gulls and plovers feed and carouse on sandy beaches. Bald eagles will be your constant companions. Don't forget your fishing pole. Salmon and dolly varden will provide plenty of action. Comfortable wall tents and a complete assortment of high-quality camping gear, including a powere gtenerator, is provided. You need bring only clothing and personal gear.
Day 6 (Thur): Silver Salmon Creek Lodge
Sometime after breakfast, our charter boat will return everyone to the lodge where hot showers await. After lunch, it's back into the field as you continue photographing the resident bear population for the remainder of the day.
Day 7 (Fri): Duck Island
This morning it's off to Duck Island, a location that can only be described as a true bird photography paradise. Little more than a rock outcrop, the island is home to many species of birdlife including common murres, parakeet auklets, common eiders, and a couple of Alaska's most colorful residents - the Horned and Tufted Puffin. Once you've completed your task, it's back to the lodge where you'll spend the remainder of the day photographing brown bear in settings which many people can enjoy only in their dreams. Who knows, maybe you'll even have the opportunity to photograph - as some have in the past - one of the area's inquisitive black bear.
Day 8 (Sat): Silver Salmon Creek Lodge - Anchorage
This morning, you'll have the opportunity to capture those images you missed earlier in the week. Following our last meal together at the lodge, our chartered bush plane will pick you up and whisk you away Anchorage.
Day 9 (Sun): Anchorage - Home
All good things must come to an end including this once-in-a-lifetime Alaskan adventure. Following an early breakfast, you will be delivered to the airport, where you will begin the first leg of your journey back to reality. |
